Data Scientist

BioSymetrics Inc. ( is seeking a Data Scientist with expertise in Machine Learning, Statistics, and Chemoinformatics to join our team in Toronto, Ontario. BioSymetrics Inc., with offices in New York, Boston, and Toronto, is an AI start-up company focused on the analytics of complex biomedical data. Our mission is to develop leading technology to vastly improve diagnostics, precision medicine, and medical discovery through advanced, large-scale integrated analytics and machine learning.

We have developed AugustaTM, an analytics and predictive modeling platform for massive data in the biomedical space, now deployed with clients in the healthcare, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology sectors. We are looking for a passionate and creative individual who is comfortable in the world of technology and Data Science and wants to take part in building the company and developing our capabilities in machine learning for disease diagnosis and drug discovery.

Roles and Primary Responsibilities

  • Work in a hands-on manner with the team at BioSymetrics to build cutting-edge capacities in the machine learning space
  • Further develop BioSymetrics’ verticals in Chemistry and Biomedicine
  • Develop tools and capabilities using machine learning, analysis, and visualization in Python
  • Develop our ability to integrate different types of data including clinical data (EMR/EHR systems including EPIC and FHIR-based systems), medical images, streaming data, chemical structures, and genome sequences
  • Work with clients and collaborators on projects, case studies, and sales cases
  • Prepare reports and documentation to communicate outcomes and evaluate software capabilities
  • Work closely with the team to develop, refine, and scale analytic procedures, systems, workflows, best practices, and other issues

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Expert knowledge of tools, concepts and methodologies of analytics and machine learning (PhD level in a biomedical/technical field preferred)
  • Experience in Chemoinformatics/Computational Drug Discovery
  • Experience in dealing with high dimensional data (e.g. data fusion, feature transformation, feature selection)
  • Advanced skills in Python
  • Experience with software development lifecycle tools and approaches (e.g. version control, automated testing, pull request submission and review, Agile methodologies).
  • Familiarity with ‘big data’ systems and infrastructure including Apache Spark, Apache Kafka, cloud computing, relational and non-relational databases a plus
  • Experience in natural language processing a plus
  • Proven collaborative skills in a diverse team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Can participate in occasional travel (primarily Boston, New York, & San Francisco)
  • Excellent time management, organizational, problem-solving, and analytic skills
